Overthinking Everything? It Might Be a Sign You Need Your Time
A few weekends ago, I found myself interrupting a friend mid-story. I paused, looked at her, and said:
“I’m so sorry I’ve been cutting off your stories. You can totally yell at me if you feel like you’re not being heard.”
She didn’t yell. Instead, she gently said:
“Jess, I think you’re in your head.”
And wow… she wasn’t wrong.
Within seconds, I knew exactly what she meant.
I’d been overthinking conversations, rereading text messages, overanalyzing facial expressions — and this wasn’t just a one-time thing. It had been building. And it hit me:
I wasn’t making time for myself.
The Connection Between Self-Care and Overthinking
It had been over a week since I’d gone for a run, cracked open a book, or journaled — all things that normally help me slow down and center myself.
Without them, my brain had nowhere to go but inward… and then way inward.
When we stop showing up for ourselves in small ways, it shows up in big ones:
We get stuck in our heads
We lose patience
We question things we normally wouldn’t
And yes, we start cutting off friends mid-story
The overthinking isn’t always about the conversation.
Sometimes, it’s your nervous system screaming:
“Hey, remember me? I need a moment too.”
Today’s Challenge: Give Yourself a Moment
So here’s your check-in for the day:
In the past week, have you made space for yourself — even for just a minute?
If the answer is no, I’ve got a simple assignment for you:
Drink your coffee while it’s hot.
That’s it.
No reheating it three times.
No sipping between emails.
Just you. Your coffee. Two minutes. A breath.
Because those tiny moments of self-care aren’t fluff — they’re maintenance for your mind.
Small steps. Big relief.
Start with the hot coffee. You might be surprised how far it takes you.
